Canyon de Chelly National Monument Welcome Center

El centro del universo, como los Hopi lo denominan. Las habitaciones muy buenas, yo me alojé en las superiores, con lencería de cama limpia y baño equipado con todo lo necesario. Climatizacion en la habitación. El restaurante en la entrada, es bueno. Tome desayuno y cena, muy amables y correctos. Comida abundante en los platos, demasiada para mi gusto, pero bien. Disfrutar del centro de visitantes y del museo que hay allí es un gusto, Recomiendo visitar detenidamente el pequeño y modesto museo.

A good time exploring and seeing some dwellings. A lot of information and videos to see at the visitors center. The staff was super helpful with which routes to take to see all the sights within a given time frame.

Visiting this National Monument was on my "bucket list" and I was not disappointed. The canyon itself is almost overwhelming. The best, and almost only, way to access the inner canyon is with a Navajo guided tour. You can arrange for the tour through the Thunderbird Lodge, and there are other tours as well. A shorter, and less expensive, tour will probably meet most people's goals Probably a good idea to arrive the evening before and visit the south rim view sites that first evening. It's a combination of rim views and seeing it from below that provides a full picture. The height of the shear canyon walls, some over 1000 ft, is difficult to comprehend. A photo does not do it justice, but the famous photographer Edward Curtis came close (search his name and Canyon de Chelly to see what I mean). Besides the geology, the cultural history of this site is amazing. The visitors center tells a large part of the story and, if you visit the inner canyon, your Navajo guide will give you details and show you the major archaeological sites. And culture is alive today here. The canyon is part of the Navajo Reservation and some families have leases in the canyon itself. And, nearly every local you meet will be Navajo. They love their homeland and are happy when others (we tourists) express an interest. Just say 'hi' and start talking. There is one trail by which one can access a portion of the inner canyon without a guide. From the south rim White House overlook a 1 and 1/2 mile trail leads down into the canyon. One of the local Navajo ladies hikes it down and back nearly every day so, if she can do perhaps you can, too.

Went with a private group with jeeps that turned out to be a Indian guide that was very informative and took extra time explaining about the canyon.

Friendly staff at the visitor center. I suggest driving the south rim first all the way to the end to the vista point then stopping at all the viewing areas on the way back. Stunning views. It’s also free.
